Why Tomato Soup?
This piece is a favorite of mine and is now available as an NFT and printed canvas. The design is a modern interpretation of the classic Andy Warhol painting series that helped to make him famous.
While Andy Warhol had access to emerging technology, it was in no way similar to the tools we have today. In this reinterpretation I ask the audience to decompose the classics into a digital representation and technique. This illustration is a digital drawing and is printable up to 96" at full resolution. Higher resolution are even available upon request!
About Andy Warhol Art
Among Andy Warhol's most well-known images are tabloid and celebrity photos, comic strips, and, in this work, the Campbell's Soup Company's well-known canned soup. Campbell's Soup Cans were displayed together on shelves in 1962 when he first exhibited the canvases. Each of Warhol's 32 canvases represents a different flavor of Campbell's soup at the time. Tomato was the first flavor introduced by the company in 1897.
The fleur de lys pattern around the bottom edge of each Campbell's Soup Can resembles that of Warhol's mass-produced, printed advertisements, but the canvases are hand-painted. By meticulously re-creating the same image on each canvas, Warhol mimicked the repetition and uniformity of advertising. In order to set each can apart from the others, he changed only the label on the front. "I used to drink it," Warhol said of Campbell's soup. I used to eat the same thing for lunch every day for the better part of two decades."
After completing Campbell's Soup Cans in 1962, Warhol began using the photo-silkscreen technique. His signature medium would be a printmaking technique originally developed for commercial use, which would link his art making methods more closely to those of commercial advertisements. When asked by the audience, "I don't think art should be reserved for the elite," he replied, "I think it should be accessible to everyone in the United States."
